Work Wear for Heading Back to the Office in Style
When vacation comes to an end and when kids are preparing to go back to school, it’s also time to update your professional wardrobe. This season, women’s office outfits are becoming more democratic while still being business casual. What is business casual? This term is usually defined as a professional style that’s less formal than what’s outlined by strict dress codes, but that’s still sophisticated. Fashion reinterprets business casual in its own way by skillfully walking the line between formal and casual wear.

While women’s suiting is still very popular, the jacket gets reworked as a piece we can easily mix and match. For instance, we can pair a patterned blazer with a solid bottom or even combine different shades of color. If your workplace allows, try out this modern must-have combination: a jacket with jeans.
In terms of style, the double-breasted blazer continues to occupy an important place in our closet. Very versatile, this often-oversized piece can be worn as a jacket with dress pants or jeans, over a dress, and even over a thick sweater. New this fall: Cropped jackets with ’80s-inspired epaulettes. Wear them with high-rise bottoms in a minimalist look.
For patterns and fabrics, masculine checks in neutral shades still reign supreme. They easily add personality to simpler looks and pair well with fall fabrics like wools and knits. Corduroy will also wow with its retro feel on work wear in rich browns and oranges, the top shades this season.
And what should you wear under your blazer? For fall, thin knits are a fantastic option. Opt for crew necks that hug the neck, mock necks, and turtlenecks. For a feminine touch, pair your jacket with a white blouse or a silk shirt. This will create a nice contrast with the structured style of the blazer. Lastly, to create a casual vibe, you can’t go wrong with an essential white T-shirt. Here’s a tip: Look for fabrics like lyocell and mercerized cotton that have a chicer finish.
Often thought of as secondary pieces, pants are now coming into their own. They can be worn without a jacket and be the hero piece of an outfit.
Among the modern styles, you’ll see straight and cropped legs. This fall, wear them in trendy materials like faux leather and corduroy. In both of these cases, a sweater and pumps will pair perfectly with these pants.
Finally, we can’t forget to mention the strong presence of wide-leg pants. They are very long and have a high waist. We particularly love them in flannels or checks that accentuate their masculine vibe, which we counter by combining them with a feminine top, like a fluid shirt with patch pockets. To achieve the perfect balance, avoid tops that are too form-fitting. Complete the look with flats or high-heels that will be covered by the pants. If your office allows, you could even try them with today’s hottest shoes for the perfect business casual outfit: white sneakers.
The midi skirt is a major player. You can find it in a number of styles—flared, straight, solid, checked, in an animal print, wool, satin, etc. The pleated midi skirt is a must that’s as on trend as it is practical. It works as well with a blouse as it does a T-shirt.
One of our new favorite styles this season is the corduroy midi skirt. When paired with a silk blouse, a tie-neck shirt, or a pointelle-knit sweater, it adds delicacy and femininity to the look while creating an interesting contrast of materials. To accessorize it in style, opt for high leather boots, with or without a heel, under the skirt.
The mini skirt also has a special place in women’s closets this season. With their high waists, they stand out in feminine looks. Pair it with loose-fitting blouses or sweaters that are tucked nonchalantly into the waist. To create a more casual look, a T-shirt is also an exceptional option. We prefer to avoid wearing miniskirts with turtlenecks and classic shirts that might give off a schoolgirl vibe. With this shorter skirt, we’d pick block-heel booties over high boots.
A classic in the professional wardrobe, this season is putting a new spin on women’s suits. We’re moving away from popular black and navy suits for a look that’s more fashion-forward, setting our sights on elegant motifs, trendy colors, and modern shapes.
In terms of color, brown is coming out of the shadows this fall. From chocolate to rust, it adds a beautiful richness to your outfits. We style these suits with a blouse or knit in shades of ivory, beige, or caramel. Those who are bolder can also try out a tone-on-tone look with a brown top. Another color that’s stepping into the spotlight this season: Klein blue. In a head-to-toe look, this bright royal blue promises you a professional look that will stand out.
The Prince of Wales check works wonderfully when worn from head to toe. In a modern palette of brown or in a traditional grey, it exudes effortless style and confidence. We finish off the check suit very simply with a light-colored top or one in the same color palette.
To reinvent your suit, think about your accessories. A belt that highlights the waist can easily elevate your ensemble with a bit of femininity. In terms of business casual shoes, they pair well with leather or suede loafers. For an on-trend touch, test out faux-croc footwear. Pumps are always a perfect choice to go pair with menswear-inspired suits since, when it comes to contrasts, we really can’t get enough!
For a professional look that’s synonymous with elegance and femininity, the dress is everything you’re asking for! Timelessly chic, the little black dress is always a sure bet. In order to energize and elevate your work wardrobe for fall however, you’ll want to pick up some of the season’s new styles.
One of the hottest options this autumn is the blazer dress. With its double-breasted crossover front and notched collar, it’s a sophisticated spin on the suit. Opt for one that comes in a rich color or with masculine checks.
The sweater dress is also moving into the office. Made modern by a midi length, it can be worn on its own or under a jacket. We love to pair it with leather boots.
Finally, don’t hesitate to jump on jumpsuits. Whether they’re form-fitting or feature wide legs, they masterfully mix femininity with modern style. They appear at the office as elegant ensembles, but also in styles that are more casual and can be matched with minimalist jewelry and dressy shoes.
