The Racing Trend Accelerates to the Top
Many of our favourite fashion icons have already given this trend the green light. Rihanna, Gigi Hadid, and Justin Bieber have all changed the rules of streetwear and injected it with a motocross, skateboarding, and BMX vibe. The biggest names in fashion are also driving this style direction that looks like it will be staying at the top of the leaderboard for a few more laps around the racetrack…
So where did this creative boost come from? We originally saw it in the '70s, but it's evolved since then, adding many more sartorial details to the mix. Could it also be inspired by '80s video games, the famous motocross scene in Charlie's Angels, and even the Hot Wheels toys we loved as kids? Probably!
What we do know is that this vintage-inspired look has ignited the creativity of the world’s greatest designers and that its most popular pieces are now part of the urban style scene. Keep your eyes peeled! You’ll see them on every street corner.
We’re thinking here of the designs from Marc by Marc Jacobs in 2014, Diesel Black Gold in 2015, and even Moschino and Versus Versace this year. Collaborations between Fenty and Puma as well as Gigi and Tommy Hilfiger have also run full throttle with the car racing and motocross theme and have become all the rage recently. In addition, many car brands have teamed up with designers to create clothing that comes their signature colours, like McLaren Canada and even Honda. We’re betting they’ll be winners!
Now it's time to take a look at the technical specs for this trend! Straight from the runway, here's what you'll need to recreate a racing vibe:
For clothes, wear nylon windbreakers, half-zip sweaters, leather jackets, jeans with ribbed moto stitching at the knees, cropped tank tops, and form-fitting overalls and jumpsuits.
For accessories, perforated driving gloves are major musts, as well as sunglasses with thin metallic or plastic neon frames, caps with patches, monochrome leather boots, and, of course, helmets!
We have a superb selection of pieces to stock your back-to-school wardrobe. Here’s what we’d suggest picking up:
If you’re subtle with your style, think about integrating checks or flames as accents, adding colour blocks, raised ribbing, and even zip mock necks that are perfect to wear everywhere. Your look will be distinctive, while not veering too far out of your lane.
If your more of a daredevil, it’s essential to go for shades that will stand out—like yellow, red, orange, and ultraviolet—on hoodies, crop tops, tees, and windbreakers. But what’s most important? Large lettering! This is a major trademark of this trend that’s inspired by sponsors’ names being splashed across race car drivers’ and motocross riders’ gear.
