Living Coral, 2019's Colour of the Year
For 20 years, Pantone, the world reference when it comes to colour, has carefully selected a shade to be the upcoming year’s hottest hue. After a yearlong process that requires thoughtful consideration and trend analysis, the colour is finally announced. This shade then goes on to have an immense influence on multiple markets and industries, most notably those of fashion and industrial design.

The Inspiration Behind Living Coral
Pantone’s colour experts comb the globe, researching ideas and reinventing hues. Their influences can come from anywhere, including different spheres of design, popular travel destinations, socio-economic conditions, and even major sporting events.
Over the past few years, the experts have found their inspiration mainly from browsing social media, which, they admit, takes up a significant portion of our lives. While 2018’s colour of the year, Ultra Violet, helped us form deeper spiritual bonds, the new hue for 2019, Living Coral, encourages us to improve how we interact with one another through rich and meaningful exchanges.
A Colour That Makes You Daydream And Reflect
Directly inspired by coral reefs that are teeming with life and colour, this shade is invigorating and certainly grabs your attention. Simultaneously vibrant and soft, it’s a colour that brings us warmth and comfort in a world dominated by social media where we’re looking for immersive experiences and authentic connections.
In such a context, this joyful colour contrasts with our world, which certain people believe to be increasingly cold and virtual, and invites us to be light-hearted and optimistic.
Described by Pantone as “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge,” 2019’s top tone is already conquering people’s hearts.
Living Coral represents modern life's fusion with our natural environment, since the colour appears as much in our natural surroundings as in our digital world.
On The Walls
A favourite shade for certain artists, coral is a main colour used in the designs of architects Luis Barragán and Ricardo Bofill. For Barragán, it was imperative that his art touch people with its beauty, which is why he boldly chose warm and happy colours for his constructions. Ricardo Bofill’s famous “Muralla Roja” is also covered in vibrant hues that simultaneously contrast and work in harmony with nature.
A Shade Made For Today
Among 2018’s milestones that inspired Pantone were the dress worn by Meghan Markle’s best friend at her royal wedding to Prince Harry, Khloé Kardashian’s baby shower where coral was part of the colour theme, and Marc Jacob’s Spring/Summer 2019 collection, which seemed to perfectly forecast the shade for the upcoming year.
Living Coral is a soft and inviting colour that reassures us as well as warms our hearts in the middle of winter’s cold weather. Keep an eye out for it in our new arrivals for women, men, and the home in order to be on trend with the rest of the world.
