Volcom recently made the journey over to London to meet their muse, international model Georgia May Jagger, and propose the idea of working together again for a brand-new, exclusive collection. The young star, who has collaborated with the brand on multiple occasions, was unable to resist—especially after they offered her the chance to participate in the entire campaign and design process. It was a dream come true! A fan since childhood of the Californian brand, the model counts it an honour to dive into the label’s world of skate and surf that she and her friends grew up in. Simons had the chance to ask her a few questions about her role as ambassador at Volcom, her inspirations, and her career.

What values do you share with Volcom?

They are making huge efforts to design in a more sustainable way and that was another reason I wanted to work with them. They are constantly evolving and coming up with new recycled fabric and more ethical ways of printing. I think all brands should be as conscious as Volcom.

What’s your favourite memory from this collection?

I love designing every Volcom collection, for me it’s just a dream to get to design pieces I’ve always wanted for my own wardrobe. The light pink coat is so cozy and I’ve always wanted a coat like it.

For over a year now, you’ve collaborated with Volcom on different collections. Where do you draw your inspiration from for developing all these lines?

I’m really inspired by different decades in fashion. I make a mood board for each collection with photographs from the 70s and old fashion shoots. I also get inspiration from what I see women wearing on the street.

Are you involved in every step of the clothing’s design process?

Yes right from the beginning from the mood board and drawing and then I try on all the early samples to make sure we get the fit just right.

There’s a sustainable development component to the Volcom collection. Can you tell us a bit more about this?

Yes as I mentioned before Volcom are very conscious of sustainability and I think that’s fantastic. They make chinos out of recycled plastic bottles and my swimsuit is made of Econyl which is recycled nylon fabric made from 78% fishing nets.

In your opinion, how can we change our habits as consumers in order to be more environmentally responsible?

I think look for brands like Volcom who are trying to change and make conscious steps to being more ethical. Also buy less “fast fashion.” We have all gotten so used to buying a lot of clothes that are not made to last. So invest in well made pieces that you can wear for years to come.

What do you do to be more “green” in your fashion consumption?

It’s hard sometimes but try and make small changes in all aspects of your life. Ask for less packaging with your purchase. Take a reusable bag when you go shopping. Use a reusable water bottle, try to cut down on single use plastic.

Besides your modelling career and your role as a Volcom ambassador, do you have any other upcoming projects that you would like to share with us?

Yes I’m currently working on my first skincare range. I have been working on it for a couple years and it will be out in 2019. I also own a hair and makeup company called BLEACH.

Do you believe art and fashion can change the world?

I think that art, fashion and music is a reaction which expresses how people feel about what is going on in the world for every decade and generation. I think there’s a lot of negativity and things that need to change in the world right now and we need art to show people's opinions of how they feel about this time.

What do you like most about modelling?

I am really grateful that I have been modelling for 10 years now. It’s crazy to me I thought I was only going to do a couple shoots in the beginning. I really love getting to travel and meeting new creative and talented people every day.

What’s your favourite city in the world and why?

London because it will always be home but I love Tokyo. I try to go every year.
