Put on Poetry with Designs from Lemaire and Tran
Season after season, Lemaire delivers unpretentious
and pared-down collections, where luxury is found
in the rich materials used and the structured, elegant cuts.
O R I G I N S
Christophe Lemaire entered the fashion world a bit by accident after having studied literature and law. He worked at Lacoste, Hermès, and Christian Lacroix amongst other designer labels, launching his eponymous line in 1992 while continuing to work in different couture houses. He changed the name of his company to “Lemaire” in 2015 when his life partner, Sarah-Linh Tran, joined him as co-designer.
Lemaire principally handles the men’s collection,
while Tran is in charge of womenswear.
The label produces pieces inspired by Paris’ cosmopolitan streets of yesterday and today and its collections are designed and developed in the Marais district,
near the original boutique located at 28 rue de Poitou.
THE MEN'S SPRING/SUMMER 2018 COLLECTION
This season, we're witness to a particularly minimalist collection—perhaps the simplest since the brand began. Where did the inspiration come from? German bands from the ‘70s and ‘80s, as well as a utilitarian feel from Europe and Japan. Lemaire says groups like Kraftwerk and La Düsseldorf inspired him to create shirts, blouses, and high-rise pants that exuded a determined simplicity. The styles are very loose, the silhouettes are wider, and the fabrics are dense.
The utilitarian and industrial feel shines through in the footwear,
with boots inspired by those of Japanese workers and sandals taken
from the archives of the Czechoslovakian army.
For the palette, Lemaire went with neutral colours
that he enhanced with rich shades like navy, rust,
camel, and even a marbled pattern.
AND WHAT ABOUT THE WOMEN?
In the women’s collection, we feel the same utilitarian inspiration conveyed using a different construction, where the looks are voluminous and elegance reigns. Here, we’re talking about “finding the poetry in reality.” We see colourful, sexy, and shiny pieces like satiny dresses and button-up painter’s blouses that create a world that’s much more romantic.
The designs are mostly monochrome, composed of blue, prune,
burgundy, and white, with a few exceptions where colours
combine and create a tie-dye effect.
